In the renaissance era, men had sexual freedom while women were expected to be virgins and faithful to their husbands. It’s okay for men to be unfaithful while for women, she and her lover should be put to death. Isabella de' Medici was strangled at a dinner table by her husband for being unfaithful. Double standards have been prevailing since time immemorial. A double standard is a concept that allows certain behavior for one group but forbidden for the other group.

Inequality in genders emanated from the biological qualities of men and women. Men should be masculine while women should be feminine. Women were expected to be at home, doing home chores, taking care of the children etc. A woman who doesn’t want to get married is strong and independent, while a man who doesn’t want to get married is a commitment-phobic asshole. Photos of shirtless men are okay but photos of moms who breastfeed are banned and reported. It is okay for a fat girl to hook up with a skinny and handsome boy but the other way around isn’t accepted and most say it’s disgusting. Women are not only sexually harassed, also men are harassed. If men show feelings, they’re weak.

Atheists eat babies. Are you shocked? I’m kidding. Atheist, pagan, nihilist, heathen, infidel, agnostic, non-believer, skeptic, cynic, or whichever you may call them are having a lot of misconceptions. An atheist is most of the time regarded as an evil, angry, devil worshipper and immoral person which is not true while a Christian is always regarded as a good person. Atheists mostly commit crimes rather than Christians because they don’t have religion to get their morals. Christians are illiterate when it comes to Science. All Christians are dogmatic.

Even in physical appearance, we’re having double standards. Fair-skinned people look like good people while darker ones are regarded as bad ones. People who look clean–no tattoos, no piercings, has clean haircuts, dresses according to the society, etc. are just fine while people who are non-conformist are sometimes regarded as “Satanist” and bad people.

Here in the Philippines, if you’re a Bisaya you’ll be regarded as uneducated, inferior and sometimes some say that they’re just for maids. If you’re good in English, you’re an intelligent person. If you wear revealing clothes, you’re a slut.

Do you know why there are double standards? It’s because we, people, let it happen. If we all want to put an end on this, then we should start with ourselves. Start with changing your point of view regarding these standards. Let’s educate the next generation to treat each other equally. Remember, one person, gender, race or belief shouldn’t feel superior or inferior from one another because we are all equal.
