I'm not a photography scholar either, but when I've taken photos in low light environments I use the ‘white balance’ technique, it's an ally in low light situations, as you get the best out of each lighting according to the scene you're in. You can do white balance automatically or semi-automatically, with an ISO 800 setting. But of course it depends on the equipment you have, I have a Panasonic Lumix GH5 II.
