Do You Agree With The 'You Only Live Once' Argument?

in #philosophy7 years ago (edited)

So many of us have heard many people say things like 'You Only Live Once' and pressurise you to do the precarious but do you agree with the philosophy of You Only Live Once?

YOLO?

It's incredibly ironic to do dangerous things if you only live once. But it's all in the name of fun some may say as they try to gravitate themselves towards their perish but doing said thing could lead to great modesty and a greater love for life as you cherish every moment rather than experiencing upheaval and vanity.

However, how can you determine whether you are close to death in an accurate manner?

Well, right now you're looking for a condition to tell you if you can be appreciative or not. If the task you want to endeavour is something you deem hazardous. Danger is subjective from person to person. Many of us fear different things and others tend to be numb to emotions.

It's not about whether or not you're close to death really because despite how we look at things, its all planned out anyway, death is certain. That's all you need to know in order to appreciate life but that does that mean we should do things just to satisfy our burning anticipation?

Death should not be feared by anyone, it should be embraced, this is what Epicurus and Seneca both agreed upon, you must not only realise these things are going to happen but anticipate them and share a cup of tea with death. It is best to live life how you want it rather than to be prepossessed with what will happen after we leave this Earth.

Here is an Excerpt from Seneca’s Letters:

If anyone has watched the Vikings TV Show here is an enlightening quote from Ragnar: 'Don't fear death. If it comes embrace it as if you are lying down next to a beautiful woman.' It was something to be celebrated to reach death and to die gratified rather than to die in vain.

Looking at a physiological perspective if I make these views open I'd most likely be diagnosed depressed for this; psychology is a fallacious study which aims to impose its thoughts of what should be accepted for society and the individual, but sometimes we need to look at things from different angles to understand them.

Do you agree with YOLO?

Absolutely. "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed with the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do." - Mark Twain

The first time I heard this it was quite the game changer. Realizing that all the things I was afraid to try would haunt me in my future if I never even gave it a shot. Letting fear overtake your passions is probably one of the biggest regrets of older generations, wishing they would have done one thing or another before the time had passed them by.

Gary Vaynerchuk will say "you only get one at bat" or "you're going to die one day" in response to people asking how he stays motivated and so driven. The question is quite binary for him as the framework of his life is truly setup that way. With only one shot, you better make the most of it no matter how many times you have to fail.

So don't be afraid to fail as it just brings you one step closer to success!

On the other side of things this could be interpreted as just trying to enjoy every moment of your glorious life. Because as far as we know, it's the only one you're going to get.

Cheers!

As in most things I have to say it is a matter of perspective. If sky diving is something that brings you great joy, I don't think you should avoid it for the possibility of the chute not opening. Or maybe you just want to experience everything once, from something as simple as food you're not accustomed to, to walking the Appalacian trail. I might not encourage people to do things that have great potential to cut short this one life, but I certainly would encourage them to truly live this one life.

Thanks once again for another thought provoking post, love seeing inside the mind of Jake :)

Although I agree with "YOLO," the whole reasoning behind it is to live a more adventurous and care-free lifestyle. You can't really do that if you always put yourself in death defying situations 😂 I say it's more about risk management. You want to enjoy life and be adventurous. But you don't want to say "YOLO" and meet and unfortunate end.

You want to have a "YOLO" moment that is exciting and safe so that you can have another "YOLO" moment.

But of course. Some people take it way too far.

Since we only live once, we must take more risks, it's a sure thing, one day we all die.

You only live once, so think twice!!

I certainly hope I meet death with a degree of dignity.

It bothers me when people use YOLO as an excuse to reckless, unhealthy or irresponsible behavior when it should be a reason to be better, you only live once so read more books, be kind to people, try to change the world, have a successful career, remind people that you love them, try to leave something good before you go, that should be the reason for YOLO

It bothers me too but I agree that you should put the energy in to leave an imprint on the Earth rather than dangerously risking your life for a temporary thrill

When I close my eyes, wainting to give my last breathe, I don't want to look back and say, "Man, I couldn't do it...."

So yeah, you only have one life, and you should live it in a way that you would be proud to live once again, if you had the chance to do so.

You have such great posts, followed you!

Just created this for you @arckrai. hope you like it^^

This is amazing! haha
Really put a smile on my face

Yes we only live once but the problem with this statement it is usually connected with "do what you feel like" rather than "think of your fellow citizens, family included" or "live responsibly" or "think about the consequences". That is the problem with "YOLO"
