Great advice here!
Learning to "talk" with your subconcious can be massively beneficial in a myriad of ways, and I think the methodology you presented is a solid one.
Meditation is great for this as well, along with learning to lucid dream. Both of these actions give you greater insight into your subconscious mind, allowing you to peak into the framework of your mind ind order to change it if you so choose.
