Apathy in the Face of Apocalypse

in #philosophy7 years ago

I think we’ve all seen the articles, and news stories about how serious Global Warming is, how addicted to our phones we are, or even any one of the 116 John Oliver specials. They’re all telling us, with varying degrees of urgency, about how we all need to fix something. Yet, year after year we only sink deeper into our iPhone games, and forget our carbon footprint.

What I find interesting are the times that we do act out. The things we find so unacceptable, that we have no other choice but to rise up. Things like wealth inequality, and offensive vocabulary. Why? Why do these things bother us enough to act up? I agree that something needs to be done about wealth inequality, and I sympathize with both sides on the PC vocabulary debate, but what makes these causes so much more worth doing something about? We march on Wall Street, people shut down Milo Yiannopoulos, and women, antifa, and the alt-right riot in the streets over statues. Why was there never, in recent history, a march on Washington against leaving the Paris Agreement? Why hasn’t everybody realized how pointless their phone addictions are?

Apathy for the abstract.

Global Warming, Phone addiction, are like the drug abuse epidemic. They’re all real, and not very much is ever done unless it directly, materially benefits one group, and what is done is rarely effective. Wealth inequality, empties my pockets, and fills the wealthy’s. Offensive language, and the quashing of, or the utilization of, gives the prohibitor or the speaker power over their audience. But if I switch to solar, my life only gets more expensive.

Whatever the origin of this Apathy may be (I would attribute it to the secularization of the world culture, which I think I’ll write about later), it is important not to forget that we are the architects of our society. When we see something we don’t like, we can change it. The only thing holding us back is ourselves, and our base desires.

We cannot underestimate our base desires, and much of my writing will be about overcoming them.

Reply if you want me to talk about any specific topics related to Apathy or the Secularization of Global Society.
