I like the distinction you make between "academic philosophy" and "doing philosophy". Very much to my own heart! Socrates and Plato were very much in the habit of "doing philosophy". Theirs was not so much an ever increasing abstraction from the real world, but rather a discovery of great ideas and insights in the midst of the real world.
