Here’s my theory. We had a discussion at our History class today about whether the Earth is flat or not. My teacher said that some scientists believe it is flat since those like Magellan who proved that the Earth is round sailed through equator, but no one ever traveled vertically, across the poles. Most of the class was discussing those two options, while I thought of something else. At the end, she said it’s stupid to go back to medieval thinking, with which I agree.
Now, I believe that the Earth is rounded but this got me thinking about possibilities. I just let my imagination flow.
At one point, we were all just throwing ideas of what the Earth could really be, and I accidentally remembered “Installation 5” from Halo. It looked something like this:
So imagine this. Earth is actually Installation 5, just wider. Similar to Coopers Station from Interstellar. And there are several problems with this theory.
Problem 1 - How does Google Earth work?
While yes, this is not a big problem, but you still need explanation for this. You can find your home using Google Maps, but so can everyone. And Google Earth’s Earth is obviously rounded. They surely haven’t 3D modeled Earth while looking at different Earth and trying to make it round. So this is what they’ve done according to my theory. They’ve put a satellite at the center of the circle, if you looked at the Earth from the side. Something like this:
So it would record the planet regularly, but then it would merge poles into one vertex. Making Earth on paper would widen the poles so things near poles would look bigger then they actually are. Here, turning Earth from cylinder to sphere would result in narrowing poles so the things would be smaller than they actually are. I.e. Greenland is smaller on paper than it is on round Earth, but Greenland on round Earth is smaller than it is on the cylinder Earth.
After merging poles, we now have a spherical Earth, but from the inside. From there, just put it on the outside and you have cylinder Earth in Google Earth shape.
Problem 2 - Earth orbiting around Sun?
I wouldn’t think so, not in this case. Let’s assume that the Earth is “the center of the Universe” again and see where that leads. So, we have Earth and everything, including Sun and Moon, orbiting around it. The first thing that came to my mind was this:
But, if this was how Sun orbited, it would be either day or night to everyone. (Assuming the Earth was wider than this line, but still). And that couldn’t be, cause we can talk to people “on the other side of the Earth” and there would be night, which means there must be Sun-Earth-Moon positions when sunlight is lighting up only specific part of the Earth, while leaving other half or so unlit. But if so, Moon couldn’t just be on the side opposite to Sun. It must be on the opposite end of Sun, while symmetrical to Sun where the part of symmetry is Earth itself. Something like this:
(Again assuming the Earth was wider than the black line.)
At any given time, on the RED half of the Earth would be day, while on the GREEN half would be night. While Sun is on the position B, Moon must be on the position A. And that solves the day-night issue with this Earth theory.
Problem 3 - Gravity
I’ve spend a lot of time thinking about this issue. There just couldn’t be infinite amount of gravity forces so that it worked for everyone, everywhere. But it all came down to one simple solution - Gravity isn’t a pull force, it’s a push force. According to that, we only need one place for only one gravity force, and that would be where the satellite we talked about earlier is. It works exactly the same as gravity we learn at school. You let go of an apple - it “falls down”. It’s just that nothing pulls it to the “center”, it rather pushes it away from the center.
Problem 4 - The other side?
Okay, so on the other side of the round Earth is dirt, then rocks, then something harder, I guess, and it all leads to a glowing core. While on the other side of the cylinder earth was the same as on Installation 5 - some technology that makes it going and working on. But, how come we don’t know about it? How did we forget about that? What made human species slowly, or even instantly, forget about what they’ve achieved? War? Did we exterminate each other to the point of barely surviving? I doubt so. We couldn’t populate back to 8 billion individuals. Maybe a natural disaster? But, wouldn’t that pretty much destroy the planet too? Do you remember how Ancient Egyptians had great knowledge about all sort of things including astronomy, medicine, math and geometry? Maybe they were the last ones to know the truth about even ancienter humans that were capable of travelling through outer space and even build their own planets?
Honestly, I don’t know. I believe that’s a mystery we’ll never know truth about.
