That this conception of happiness did not exclude pleasure is shown by the following; "I came quickly upon the road to happiness. Arriving at the place where Happiness resided, I said, 'I remain, O Happiness, on account of you and drink water and eat water-cress and sleep on the ground.' She answered me and said, 'I will make hardships more pleasant for you than the benefits to be obtained from wealth, which men prefer and ask of me, not perceiving that they are entrusting themselves to a tyrant.' When I heard Happiness say that eating and drinking these things was not training but pleasure, it impelled me to this way of living" (37th Letter of Diogenes). Stobaeus quotes Teles as saying, "One who is happy is one who is free from suffering and trouble. A man who is in pain and grief and fear- how can he have a pleasant life? And how can any one who has not a pleasant life be happy?" (Flor. 4, 108, 83). Dio Chrysostom ascribes positive pleasures to Diogenes. "He (Diogenes) got more pleasure, too, out of sunning himself and more pleasure in eating his food than they (the rich) did. But the seasons were by far his greatest delight... And so he used to partake of a barley cake with greater pleasure than others did of the costliest of foods, and enjoyed a drink from a stream of running water more than others did their Thasian wine" (6, 9-12).
