Someone saw Nasreddin Hodja searching for something on the ground.
‘What have you lost, Mulla?’ he asked. ‘My key,’ said the Mulla. So they both went down on their knees and looked for it. After a time the other man asked: ‘Where exactly did you drop it?’
‘In my own house.’
‘Then why are you looking here?’
‘There is more light here than inside my own house.’
This is one of the best stories of the mystic sufi Mulla Nasreddin hodja since it illustrates how humans are most of the time searching for things in the wrong places and here in this post i will take "Happiness" as an example.
Happiness is the ultimate purpose of every human being as stated by Aristotle in his famous quote where he says:
Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence - Aristotle
With that being said, most humans are running in all directions in search for happiness. They look for it through material possessions, they think that they will find happiness when they get a new car or a bigger house or a new gadget, they are trying to fill the void in their spiritual life by possessing stuff. But stuff is just stuff. And we are here on this magical and wonderful earth given a short period of time.
Can't we stop all for a moment and meditate upon it?
Can't we just be present for a moment and listen to the birds singing?
Is possessing stuff really worth living for?
Are we living for stuff or are we living to experience life and its wonders and splendors?
While running after stuff. You'll be missing life. You will not hear the birds singing because your desires would have made you deaf. You will not see the beauty of nature because your desires would have made you blind. You get one thing, then get bored and want something else. And you go on wanting more and more until you find out that you've spent your whole life running after stuff and you have missed life.
Happiness will not be found in material possessions and will not come to you from the outside. Happiness comes from within. Happiness is a choice. You can choose to be happy or you can choose to be unhappy. As stated by buddha :
Happiness is a choice, not a result. Nothing will make you happy until you choose to be happy. No person will make you happy unless you decide to be happy. Your happiness will not come to you. It will only come from you - Buddha
Buddha also is reported to have said :
There is no path to happiness. Happiness is the path - Buddha
Even if you think there is less light within. Happiness is still there in this moment, it is nowhere else. Actually you will not even have to search for it there. It will come to you on its own if you stop searching outside and just go within, it will come to you on its own when you'll start living each and every moment with love and gratitude.
Another quote from Buddha:
Judge nothing, you will be happy. Forgive everything, you will be happier. Love everything, you will be happiest - Buddha
