DISCLAIMER: I am not posting this for or against any religion or doctrine thereof (in general, I am strongly against the dark art of indoctrination). This is merely a question attached to an acecdotal philosophical observation/argument. Food for thought.... Enjoy ;)
Somehow it stands that people who have endured dark childhoods and managed to hold onto their inner light through to adulthood seem to be the some of the most actively committed individuals working for the betterment of the world around us. Whether misguided or worthy of sainthood, many of those who grow up to become caring and compassionate healers choose to do everything in their power to help fellow neighbors and strangers because they themselves have experienced and endured great hardships through their developing years. I myself am one of those empaths who has experienced an almost involuntary dedication to the service of those in need (knowing fully well that no good deed goes unpunished) after suffering through some dark and traumatic personal experiences, and while reflecting on that generality, a thought dawned on me:
What happened to Jesus the Nazarene to drive him on his mission to spread his message of love? At least this is what the writings of old tell us:
Born into poverty, he was faced with the economic hardships endured by his parents.
From the very beginning of his life he was a fugitive refugee, having been smuggled out of his home country to escape a brutal tyrannical regime.
Because of this refugee status, he grew up as an unknown stranger in a foreign land, cut off from any and all relatives.
Not only did he survive the bloody infanticide committed by a power-driven king, but he grew up with the weight of countless innocent lives that were murdered because of the circumstances of his birth.
A man who could survive all of that and have a heart large enough to love the most downtrodden of strangers is truly great and amazing. I'm sorry, but it would have driven me mad to learn that hundreds if not thousands of children were killed in an carpet bomb-like attempt to murder me based on nothing more than one man's fiat prediction. It may very well could be that the main driving force behind his decision to leave everything he ever knew so he could spread and share a message of love as a poor, dust-covered traveling vagabond was the fact that he had seen, witnessed, and survived such evil.... That he had weathered the storm and vowed to fight against the demons of mankind by robbing them of their power.
I'm not going to tell you that I have absolute knowledge or evidence on the subject or claim to know what impact any of that truly had, nor am I going to argue the doctrine or truthful accuracy of the stories about him. I havent experienced even half of what he was born into, and I dont pretend to know what it is like to be a refugee or to be the only begotten son of an all-powerful and all-knowing ever present deity.... I merely wish to post the thought and pose the question, because in all my years of catholic schooling I have sadly never have heard any discussion on the matter or been taught any insight into and understanding of the life of the person that so many so blindly follow, and I would love to hear some of your inspired thoughts on the subject ;)
