I like the third quote @cryptonik A lot of the battles we fight........or more correctly, choose to fight (whether they be physical or mental,) are fought because we want to prove a point to ourselves or to our adversaries. So in a real sense we are catering to our own desires to conquer and win rather than the cause itself, even though the cause may be truly worthy and honourable. Self satisfaction is at the core of our humanity and try as we might, we cannot suppress it for any length of time. I agree with Aristotle when he says, “......the hardest victory is over self.” We are so selfish we find it very easy to justify our selfishness and then pat ourselves on the back whilst sililtaneously elevating our selves as heroes.
