I really wish Samsung would go back to use either plastic or aluminium on the back on their phones. On the left on this photo you could see brand new Samsung Galaxy J5 2017 which features aluminium back side. On the right side you could see Huawei Mate 9 which also feature aluminium on the back. This is a material that both is durable and doesn’t produce the fingerprint magnet effect!
Samsung Galaxy S8 in the middle is having a glass back. As you could see mine is already damaged. I have to use a case when there is a glass back. Glass is also very slippery. Apple used glass on iPhone 4 and 4S and most people eventually ended up damage that back. It’s just not a good material for phones. But I suspect companies use it because they want your device to break.
With glass back they also have an excuse for not giving you a phone with a removable back side. With glass back they have an excuse for not allowing you to replace the battery. Sure this is something we also see on aluminium back phones but at least that is a durable material. Apple is now going back to use glass back with iPhone X. Very overpriced phone.
Does anyone really want glass on the back side? I remember the Sony Xperia phones which used it. It made the phones slide off surfaces and end up on the floor. It’s just a really bad material on a phone.
The thing with plastic backs is that it doesn’t always make a device feel cheap. But it gives you some amazing features like be able to replace battery, replace back side cheaply and feels very good in the hand. I want to see more companies bring out high-end devices with plastic backs. Because overall in usability it can make your device more usable and user friendly.
No longer is a smartphone something premium. It’s abundant and everyone has one. So now we are going back to usability again. But in the western world they are doing the opposite. They are trying to create a ultra premium market of phones. Galaxy Note 8, Google Pixel 2 XL and iPhone X are around 1000 euro in price. They are raising the prices!
Meanwhile Chinese phone brand companies like DOOGEE, Blackview, M-horse, Leagoo, UMIDIGI and more lower the prices! You could get a quad-core Android phone for as low as 50 euro with 4G 2018.
So we have a market that goes to the extreme in both directions. You really don’t have to pay a lot for a good phone 2018. You now just pay for the brand logo. Which is starting to become more pointless. They don’t even offer you any special extra features when you pay premium anymore.
I eventually believe phones will be given out for free. Since it will be so cheap and abundant. But many in the western world don’t know about this and will keep paying much for overpriced technology. I like technology but I also see how it has increased some phones 400 euro in price the last 5 years! That is very crazy! Do your research and you can make amazing deals.
Will be very interesting how phones will develop the next 5 years. 2012 was the start of big screen phones. Now we are moving into the next phase of evolution with phones capable of more AI intelligence. Phones are becoming better at detecting faces and learning what you want more of. I’m very excited to see how all this will develop. 2017 was the year of all-screen displays and dual rear camera phones. What will be the major thing 2018, 2019 and 2020? Soon we will know!
I love metal more than glass. Glass easy to crack and our fingerprint easy to stick. Makes phone doesnt look elegant
True! Metal is so much better material. And Samsung really needs to fix their fingerprint sensor it usually don't work on first try. Meanwhile Huawei Mate 9s sensor always work on the first try. We all want more elegant phones that performs amazing. Especially they need to solve this issue of constant annoying updates every damn week. It should be updated in the background without notify me all the time. Also there should be an option to instantly go back to previous version if you don't like the new OS.
The next thing they need to fix it to allow you with all notifications to remove them in status bar. Some system notifications doesn't wanna be removed. Which becomes an annoyance because they take up lots of screen space. And remove notifications for obvious things like: You are now charging your phone. I don't need to be told that I know I just plugged in a cable in my phone! Some apps doesn't allow you to take a screenshot which is silly. It's my phone! Then a user will just take a photo of the screen with another camera. You shouldn't restrict people to use features on their phone.
While I do find glass more aesthetically pleasing than metal, I agree that it's not a good material in terms of build quality. My Galaxy S8 feels so fragile without a case, while I would carry around my OnePlus One or 3 naked without any problem. Unfortunately, I think glass will stay because of the wireless charging, but lets hope they find a way to make it more durable somehow. Great post, btw! Followed.
Maybe glass is only the perfect material for make your phone is more beautiful with design yes! look awesome but you right! every device with glass back is very harmless when you use your glass phone out of nowhere you are starting notice your phone on the back already have scratches without reason then if you accidentally drop your glass device It's gonna be mistake we don't know the phone will survive or not probably only get fully shattered on the glass back! this is why I'm trying not to drop my glass phone! you have to more careful.
