If this were a contest you'd win "Most Original Answer." I thought I knew most of the random southern islands, but this one is barely ringing a bell. Did Scott stop here on his voyage from NZ to Ross Island at the start of his last expedition?
Like most of those islands down there it has quite a history. The Australian explorer Sir Douglas Mawson used it as a base for some of his expeditions.
I think I was wrong about Scott, but maybe I heard about Macquarie in relation to Mawson - still haven't read about his expeditions though. Yes, I guess the whalers were the first to "settle" most of those islands. Something about these random rocks in the middle of the hostile southern seas has always intrigued me.
