I have a D850 which means the picture is 45mp to begin with... it's not lot I'm lacking detail and sharpness in the image.
It's not like I could have switched out my 135mm lens for my 24-35mm lens and gotten more than enough of the scene.
WHY
So why use the 135mm and get an monstrous 200mp image?
Why do a 19 shot panorama with the resulting file being 820mb large Raw file?
BECAUSE
- Depth of field
- Compression of the background
- Practice ... i wanted to see if it could be done and if it would work. Tune up those skills.
- And a belief that one day someone will want to print insanely huge prints... but this hope isn't rooted in reality so far.
- Why not... it was pretty easy with my panorama tripod.
Using a 135mm gives crazy depth of field and it compresses the background. But if I back up like 100ft to get the scene in view I'll loose the depth of field at least.
In any case I really should have gotten a shot with the 35mm or the 50mm and shown the difference... next time.
Great points about DOF and compression of the background. Hadn't really thought about that part of it!
45mp plus 19 photos? You could print that all over the moon!
technically you have a point. The DPI needed would be really low seeing as the viewing distance is kinda far from here to the moon.
I just did the math the moon is 68365440 inches across
My image is 18916 dots across so dechnically the DPI would be .000276dpi
IS THAT ACCEPTABLE?
Here's a resource for what DPI is acceptable
http://resources.printhandbook.com/pages/viewing-distance-dpi.php
at 2ft viewing distance 300DPI is the minimum
At 650ft 1dpi is the minimum
I'm guessing that the moon at 238k miles I'm guessing .0002 is plenty acceptable DPI
Actually I did some math and I'm thinking that 332k FEET is probably the distance where .0002 is the necessary distance for viewing.
Keep in mind this means each dot on said printer for this moon print would be 3600 inches large aka 301ft
So what I'm reading is that we need to have Elon Musk buy your photo and then he can print it (at a truly acceptable DPI) so that everyone can see it.
But really, I'm impressed at your thoroughness, haha. Your photo is basically 5x the necessary resolution. Not bad..
What I'm reading is that @jarvie has a lot of free time. ;D
Well, in my opinion, I think it was well worth your time! Lovely and interesting photo!
Hey thanks I really appreciate it!
It was fun to share some cool insights along with it i suppose!
wonderful photos.
thank you
What a gorgeous shot. Someday someone somewhere is going to want a monster print! :)

I think the right answer to the why question is because you wanted to!
And we are all grateful that you did!
Really love the depth of field. And the details are crazy! I want a monster print in my room!!!!
You can't argue with the results. Absolutely brilliant photo.
¡Very beautiful photography very good framing!
