Hercules

The 151' steam powered tug Hercules was constructed in 1907 by John H. Dialogue and Sons of Camden, New Jersey. Built as an ocean going tug she sailed for San Francisco via the Straits of Magellan with her sister ship, Goliah, in tow.
Her 3 cylinder, triple expansion steam engine develops 500 Indicated Horsepower. She was often employed towing sailing ships north from San Francisco due to the prevailing westerly winds on the the coast.
She is currently moored at Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco and is one of a number of exhibits at the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park. A trip to the park is a great way to spend an afternoon for anyone interested in maritime history.
