Great tutorial, @derekkind! I often find it hard to judge a composition on the back of the camera. I've got home and discovered what I thought was the best composition turned out to be missing just a bit at one edge or even totally wrong. It frustrates me. I often think about taking a laptop/tablet and checking the compositions on a bigger screen on the go. But usually I'm there too late and running around like a madman trying to get as many compositions in as possible. I think if I did it more like you and got their early and took the time to test out some angles first, it might be more workable.

I feel exactly the same - and I don't always get there early, and often I get home and see that the composition could have been improved, but I try to overshoot when possible to give myself those options later, all the while learning with practice how to be more efficient and how to zero in on the best compositions right away. :)
