Decades ago, old local settlers here in Marikina city claims that the river was once rich with different kinds of local fishes like tilapia bangus and many more varieties of crabs and shrimps. But since the progress of Metro Manila has started, they also introduced the use of janitor fishes to clean the Pasig river that goes all the way to Marikina.

As we can see in the first two shots, there's an architecture that can be seen in the river. A lady with tilapia fishes, this serves as a remembrance that the river was once indeed a source of fish for the locals. But people did not have discipline as they threw all their wastes in the river, so the local government used janitor fish which they thought could clean the mess the people created.

Now, the janitor fish are a threat to the river, the fish digs the river wall causing erosion. Those tiny bubbles just above the water are all janitors fish.

The river still has a few edible fish like tilapias, but mostly populated by janitors nowadays. The river itself is being restored by the local government by improving the surroundings and beautifying it to be more of a park. But the water content, the janitors, hopefully, will be eradicated as well to fully restore the river to its former glory.

Marikina River used to be an important transport route during the Spanish colonial era, but its importance as a transport route diminished when the Philippines' national highway system became more established. The resulting lack of river boat traffic and the deforestation of the upland areas in what is now the Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape contributed to the river's siltation, further reducing its value as a transport route.

Due to negligence and industrial development, the river has become very polluted, an act which recent Marikina City administrations have attempted to address.

The current city admins are doing well. Hopefully they can revive the old days 😊

Ohh Didn't know much about Marikina.. Thanks for giving a little bit knowledge about that place. And also the photography is your??? It is so beautiful... Just wow!!

Yes just a product of point and shoot. Thanks!

Wow!! you maintain the serial nicely. Now it is very easy to realize the steps of your photograph. Wonderful Photograph one after another.

too sad, people destroyed the once beautiful river of Marikina. i hope people would learn what discipline is all about because even if the government tries to restore the cleanliness of the river, it will always go back to that state if people would continue to throw their garbages in the river.

Hefty fines and determined city admins are in place but you are right, it is still up to the people. Hope we all learned from Ondoy.

Nice photos and part of history. :)

Fantastic pictures!

Thanks!
