The sensor in cameras works best for subjects with alot of grey areas so you really have to fool it when taking a subject with very defined dark and light areas. You need alot of dynamic range to caputure the moon and darkness. I would use auto bracket and then composite the images in editor. Most cameras unfortunately will stuggle with this scene. Even the human eye would have problems with this scenario. I'm no pro but know that any images you see of this scene are heavily edited to produce the desired result.
