Hey there thanks for stopping by to visit :) I can't say I'm much of a birder either so I'm not really sure - I looked for some more facts to find that the Kiwi usually only lays one egg also - only because the eggs are so big that they break them in the nest if there's more. One particular variety of Kiwi called the Rowi only ever lays one egg a year - unfortunately this makes them the most rare NZ bird.

Well thanks for looking into that, one egg a year would surely make for the bird being rare since I would guess about half the eggs would end up being male birds.
