It is well known that roads in Russia are bad. A famous Russian proverb states that there are two main problems in Russia: fools and roads. But this proverb are true only in case of man-made roads - in winter Lake Baikal become the best road you ever saw - made by Mother Earth :)
In winter all transportation around Island Olkhon and nearby areas goes by ice. About 1 meter thick with flat smooth surface ice become ideal highway - cars easily achieve speed of hundred kilometres per hour and more. In general it is safe to drive, but you need local driver who knows the area and understands the ice condition. The most dangerous time when you should be very cautious with ice driving is the end of March when Baikal ice is starting to melt.

Is balkan a lake? I often hear the name balkan. An amazing experience if you have a chance to walk on ice like this. I really never saw it @ansharphoto.
