We Live in a Grim Society | Poetry and Photo Series | Thousand Word Visuals

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

"You walk into a room with a dresser sprawling with water bottles. Each one is filled to the rim with used needles, reminiscent of the game Ker Plunk. Blood stains on the ceiling in a effort to clear a clogged rig. The lingering smell of rotten food somewhere in the crevice between the bed and the wall...

I may be good at depicting beautiful imagery but what many people don’t realize is that i’m just as aware of and capable of capturing the imagery nobody should ever have to witness. For every beautiful picture I’ve ever taken I can just as easily take one that would ruin your day... week... life... reality" -Thousand Word

I strongly believe there is a negative correlation between the health of our “herd mentality” and people accepting medication as a solution to make their lives bearable. The more normalized amphetamines, benzos, barbiturates and antidepressant medications become, the higher the bar is set for people with a sober tolerance to bullshit. We are ignoring the problem by masking the symptoms while raising the bar for everyone in the process. I do not see this ending well.

This series was taken during a walk through a local forest. Times are tough for myself and I know they are even worse for others. I've smelled it, I've seen it, I've heard it, I've lived it.
It's not exactly easy to get people doing illicit activities comfortable around a camera without partaking yourself. I can tell you that the imagery would absolutely blow your mind if you are not accustomed to what is actually happening in suburban areas of America.

Thank you guys for the curation help.

Ultimately I would like to publish a book with my photos and stories but it would have to get way deeper than this... and ultimately I just don't hang around any of the same people that I used to. I think they might not enjoy me poking around with a camera at their illicit activities. I can tell you that the imagery would absolutely blow your mind if you are not accustomed to what actually happens in suburban areas of america.

I think if you look them in the eye and ask how they are doing, they will understand you are concerned for them. It doesn't hurt to have some candy on hand.

Indeed. I enjoy talking to others that are going through it. I help any way I can. Typically through advice, company, and allowing them to share their story and struggles with me while I keep and open mind and heart.

The drugs destroy a Lot of lives every moment in the World.
have a nice Day And thanks for this great photos.

Appreciate you stopping by to have a look. You have a great day as well!

I should clarify that ultimately I do not think all drugs should be generalized into the same destructive category. I'm particularly critical of pharmaceutical "wonder drugs" that are prescribed for a multitude of "disorders". Many of which I believe to not be disorders at all and are actually our minds warning us of potential external but no-so-direct threats.

Generalizing just leads to distrust and unnecessary self discovery (ie. using drugs like methamphetamine and heroin)

Many people, including myself, benefit tremendously 'in terms of understanding and awareness' from the use of psychedelics such as Psilocybe cubensis. However mushrooms differ tremendously from modern pharmaceuticals in that they amplify awareness rather than inhibit it. Not for everybody.

That said there are obviously going to be exceptions and cases where certain drugs are the only option. I just think we are over medicating though with xanax, opiates, amphetamines and other drugs that make mind numbing tasks a bit less mind numbing yet ultimately lead us to an early psychological grave.

There are people who are homeless and drugs had nothing to do with it. Injuries, illness, and false accusations will do it.

It is really easy to say they deserve these problems and do nothing, isn't it? Blame it on drugs. With that logic it is drugs that caused you to not have compassion. So you also have a problem, which is worse.

I think you may be misinterpreting what "I" am actually saying. The whole excerpt on drugs was more of a monologue on why I think parts of society are collapsing without people even batting an eye. Nobody wants to ask for help and most people think if you aren't working as hard as them you aren't worthy of a place at the table. (metaphorically speaking) And certain drugs can and do make life easier for the time being... but ultimately they also raise the bar for everyone not on those drugs dealing with the same mental stresses "organically".

I don't think it's very easy at all to say people deserve these problems. I'm an ex drug addict myself. I have seen and experienced first hand "drugs cause people to not have compassion" because ultimately at the end of the day they make you suicidal and you're only worried about your next fix. Not to say I didn't still have a kind heart but I couldn't help myself so how was I going to help someone else?

The quote was from my own personal experience being homeless and on drugs. I'm not trying to diminish or take away from anyone else's struggles. Saying someone can't be sad because other people may have it worse is like saying someone can't be happy because someone else may have it better.
