The problem is that my body can't stay still if I'm moving the leds.
A long time ago I did what you just suggested, just tried to paint with a flashlight.
Use tripod maybe?
Or if you don't have one, improvise!
I do this all the time, because my tripod is big, heavy and hidden deep at the bottom of wardrobe - so I place camera on the chairs, tables, piles of books or anything that works ;-)
I actually used a tripod, it still doesn't change the fact that if I'm self-photosooting it's really hard not to move my body while I'm moving the lights, that's almost impossible. The camera catch every little movement on long exposure. Maybe I don't set the camera right? I'm trying just to play with the details on manual mode @adamdo

But you can move them when you photograph your dog ;-)
