If you think about small spot on the map, which is Belgrade, Serbia, what will come to your mind? East, dictatorship, Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito, Marina Abramovic and something Slavic, and maybe if you were raised in Europe couple of street impressions like ćevapčići or mild homemade cheese or wild street market.
I have visited Belgrade in 2016 for the first time and it was a quite short but intense trip where I hope I could grasp a bit of cityscape and atmosphere of the place. I will try to tell the sort city story in the pictures I made in that trip.
It's still very Soviet, but quite curious. Because only in Belgrade, former Yugoslavia capital, architecture style that is called brutalism reached reached unprecedented heights, in a literal and figurative sense. I have been inside the house that is made from concrete and has 32 floors. It was built in 1978.
Belgrade suffered from the NATO bombings in 1999 and still the city administration doesn't demolish these buildings that keep the shape of the war.
Actually, the city has a reach history of belonging to someone. It was slavic, then it was Turkish, then Austrian, then Soviet Yugoslavian...It keeps all the layers still. And it stays on the Danube.
The museum of contemporary art stays in ruins for almost 20 years...
Tito's monument is freshly renovated and full of visitors.

Serbia wants to become a part of the EU for a long time, but struggles to implement all the requirements of the European Union. One of them is the fight against corruption. And the question about Serbian participation is postponed indefinitely.

So many interesting characters. This photo was made in Novi Beograd, its another part of Belgrade full of block of flats. And somewhere nearby was born an internationally famous performance artist Marina Abramovic.
