Lighting - Low Key Photography

Exploring my speedlight

So if you are into photography the first and most important thing to understand is light and how it works in capturing an image, the better you understand the relationship between light and how to expose for it, the more you will notice the improvement in the quality of your photography.

The images I share today are done in low light conditions, but they can be replicated almost anywhere if you change your exposure settings, for example making the shutter speed faster or by making the aperture smaller, you can manipulate how much light will reach the sensor.

In low light conditions you might encounter some problems exposing the shot correctly, in most cases you can do one of three things, either increase your ISO which will allow your sensor to be more sensitive to light, but it comes at a cost of noise or graininess in the shadows of the picture.

Next you can open up the aperture to allow the lens to send more light to the sensor, but that also comes with a drawback depending on the desired result of the image, as a wide open aperture provides a very shallow depth of field, so sometimes even parts of your subject can be out of focus due to the shallow depth of field.

And finally you can change the shutter speed, but this will also have dramatic consequences if the shutter speed is very slow, as now camera shake and motion blur become an issue, but this is the easiest of the three to manage as a simple tripod will eliminate the problem or any solid surface that will prevent camera motion.

In all three photos you should notice at least one of these issues, but with practice and some additional equipment you should be able to produce stunning images that are rewarding , low key photography is a topic I really enjoy and inspire me to improve my skills as a photographer.

Thank you for your support.
