So I've been toying with idea of setting up and online creative self portraiture course for quite some time now, and finally I've got the ball rolling!
If you are placing yourself in the public eye on social media platforms, whether you're a business professional, a performer, a social media influencer, your images are hugely important. As human beings, our first impressions are based on visual context. It's human nature.
My goal is to show how you can capture beautiful self portraits using just your phone.
The practice of self portrait photography is also a great way to get to know yourself better. What you love, what angles, lighting, clothing, facial expressions, etc, work best for you. It's also a great tool to help raise your self esteem, when you look good, you start to feel good, which in turn makes you feel more confident in so many aspects of your life.
And let's not forget the simple joy of creativity in itself.
So to gage interest and kickstart this project I took some creative selfies on my iPhone and shared them across social media to show what could be achieved using a phone, a single continuous light source and a tonne of tulle fabric.
These are my results...
All editing was done on free mobile photography apps.
I'm hoping to get the online course up and running within the next couple of months. Teaching lighting techniques, posing, facial expressions, angles, framing and cropping, backgrounds and locations, hacks for more creative captures, editing and useful but affordable tools that you may want to add to your kit, to make the process a lot easier. I'll also be setting challenges for those who enrol, as a way for them to use and practice their newfound skills and get their creative juices flowing.
So I know you're all just dying to see a little behind the scenes shot of me during these self portraits. (A little side note- yes I'm aware you can see my knickers...I'm a burlesque performer, it's really not that big a deal 😂)
