Night photography is one of the trickiest, but also, the most rewarding elements within a photographer's tool kit. Without light, the autofocus function runs amok. You essentially have to eyeball the focal point of your subject, which can be rather challenging. Add in a constantly moving target like fireworks, and you have the makings of a tough photography session!
Unfortunately, I didn't quite get it right this time around for the Independence Day fireworks. I was late to the show, and thanks to that b-tch Murphy's Law, I suffered equipment failure. It was all I could do to finally set up and get some shots downrange, focal points be damned!
As expected with such a haphazard photography session, some of the pictures were less than stellar. However, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!
Instead of throwing out the results of the session, what I did instead was apply high contrast filters to my photos. This is possible due to the fact that in night photography, the camera sucks in all available light sources, which of course is limited. This limitation provides margin to push the contrast magnitude to the hilt, creating unique color and ambiance schemes.
These shots offer a different insight into the night cycle of our planet. Even though it's not my best work, I hope you will enjoy it! :)
Yeah, I learned the same lessons! Tripods are a must to use the settings necessary to make them look good. And enough distance to get the shot inside the full frame.
You had to have a good time. I will follow you because you are someone who appreciates life.
Oh yeah, it was a great time...thank you so much! :)
