GosT — [live music photography//set 1: Hot Lights, Cold Neon]

Many of you have learned over my time here that I'm a huge fan of synth, retro, and horrorwave — and of GosT performing live; lurking in the shadows behind a stack of amps, levitating menacingly and serenely behind a tangle of machines and cables.

I'm definitely still finding my footing on the slopes of a learning curve when it comes to live music photography. The genres that I'm most interested in — metal and electronic — tend to have some of the most frenetic movement, lighting, and performances. Insane flashes and blinding backlights, inconsistent smoke and flames, artists running at full tilt and smashing into each other or coercing wild masses of fans into a frenzy... it's a lot different than standing on a mountain and attempting to capture the horizon, that's for sure.

Honestly? I fucking love it.

I can see a ton of places where I've not managed colour and exposure properly, but truthfully, somehow I don't care. (well, I do, but you know) There's something to be said for standing on the stage with or at the feet of someone pouring their heart and soul out to a crowd who are all feeding on that crackling energy and returning it in electric waves. My hair always stands on end when I get the chance to experience moments like these, but again, I'm a big live music buff to begin with.

Here's someone's video of the actual show I photographed these at, at the exact time of the stage lighting firing in these hot bursts of cold neon. How damn cool is the internet?!

Like any music, GosT won't be for everyone... but if you love an incredible show and a bit of jarring dissonance and eighties horror in your music, try this out. (And get a feel for how damn difficult it is to nail this guy down! 📷)

I've been coming back to sorting and editing these photos in small sets, and I'm really proud of the gems I'm finding in here, even if I can't be perfect at the craft right off the bat. I can't wait to look back some day and trace the progression of my photography through these first (dancing crazily) steps.

These photos and words are my own work, inspired by travels all over this pretty blue marble of ours. I hope you like them. 🌶️

Really nice shots. Like how you captured them midair and that last mirror shot is noice.

Checking out some gost now.

honestly, he never frigging stops jumping so it's more coincidence than skill, lol. I don't know HOW he goes that hard for hours at a time. It's insanity.

You are amazing! love the passion you exude, and the love you spread.Thank you for being a great example of pursuing your dreams!

I so needed this today. Thank you, Jesse; you are always a calming breeze.

damn its so good and perfect loved it

b'awwwww. Thank you. Some days having someone offer up kindness like this, unprompted, is everything.

I checked out the video , I actually liked it . Need to go listen to the actual songs and check out the production . Sweet write up and pics.

it can get dark and angry; run with it, tortured artist!

I...admit I have never seen GosT....in fact, I've never even heard of GosT. Looks like a freaking cool stage presence though.

you can say it and I can admit it... I have a "type" 😬

Love the photos. I thought the third and fourth photos posted were money shots. The third photo because the lighting looks really cool. The fourth photo captured raw emotion with his body language, even though a mask is covering his face. Great work!

Wow, these are pretty sweet, is that just like a one man band? I honestly think your photos are more captivating than the video, I really like what you captured, especially seeing how that guy can move! I wasn't a huge fan of the music until the breakdown portion after the first minute, then that got my head bangin'. Yea, wow, these photos are actually really awesome, especially that last one.

It's just the one guy. He sets up synth loops and then just goes wild! some of it can be really dissonant and uncomfortable with horror-like vibes which can be offputting, but every now and again it gets soooo crunchy. Admittedly, there are three or four songs I listen to recorded, but being AT the live show, I love EVERYTHING. It's partially the vibe, for sure~

Wow, that's awesome for one person to set that up. I like a little bit of horror vibe music. Some of this was pretty good, like I said around a minute in, I could listen to that more than once lol. Oooo, it's not a heavy song but its called "Dancing with your Ghost" by No Resolve, I think the video and the song are awesome. It's more haunting than horror lol....Yea I can imagine this live show would be pretty sweet!

Awesome show! Makes me remember I don't go to enough industrial shows. Also that my current picture taking device is butt. Yours look great!

That damn @crimsonclad ...so good with the typing fingers and the ever-snapping camera. GREAT post!!

i'm wondering how much sweat is forming in that mask under the stage lights...

oh god it is probably so so so so so so so much 😬

I think the same thing every time I see this or daft punk or kiss, etc. I've always thought that since I was a kid. lol

The person looks so dedicate with his work and after see review about him that you like his work. It's mean he is also enjoying his work.

I think he move figure on keyboard like PRO.

That must have been a crazy show! We love GosT here :) Husband likes to use their music in his little videos, I will tag you when I finally post one :)

yeah, definitely! Have you gotten to see him go live recently? He's been having some traveling issues, but I'm hoping the new album is extra spoopy.

Definitely let me know when he post something~

Looks amazing,You managed to get some really nice shots.Especially the one you got mid-air.

I was saying above...he never stops jumping, so a lot of it is coincidence when you take a LOOOOT of photos, but I appreciate it. It came out mostly sharp and I really am enamored with it. In the next set, I have another that's even better :)

uhh! that looks insane ... I need to search for these MADMAX people over the internet .. dunno know much about them..
And as always you have some great photographs Crimi :)

thanks! he's definitely pretty wild and I would highly recommend it for the spectacle alone, anyways :D

Wow..amazing photography i appreciate your post...thanks for sharing.Best of luck..

really amazing ... I really liked your post...

My curiosity you want to visit my blog awaiting for me..

Great freakin pix! I missed a great show!

So Sick @crimsonclad! I was literally at a monthly goth revival night at the local metal club called "Gandalfs" :P

So epic, Darwave was cooking up a smokey storm for us all to get lost in!

Me, I'm not full goth piercing man at all, but I am a writer performer, and I like to dress up, I happened to be fully Duked-up as per my profile pic, so even in a place of stand-outs, I stood out haha, epic shows! That guy's mask is badass!

These photos are awesome. At 2:36 in the video I think we can see your camera and part of your head. That was some crazy energy going on in there. It would have been so fun to be in there to take pictures. I really like the colors of the lights with the green reflecting off his mask. My favorite one is the third one down where you got his hand on the keyboard, but the midair jumping shot is amazing too. Great job!
