On the advice of a walking tour guide, I bought a 1.90 euro ticket at the funiculaire station near Cathedral St. Jean. Not much to see on the way up as it's in a tunnel, but you get out right at the entrance to the Basilica.
The exterior is amazingly ornate. Take the time to look at it closely. Then, go inside to see the massive mosaics on both sides of the church. The stained glass windows are also incredibly detailed. Be sure to go down to the crypt; it is another area where services can be held. The adjacent chapel is also worth a look.
When you are ready to finish your visit, go to the east side outside and enjoy the magnificent view of the city. Then, follow the signs to walk down the paths of the rosary garden. Look down and see a small brass rose plaque. This represents a Hail Mary. After ten of them, there is a numerical marker representing an Our Father. Even if you are not inclined to say the prayers, it is easy to appreciate the meditative quality of the path. You can end up taking the Montee des Chazeaux, a staircase that goes all the way down to Rue du Boeuf in Old Lyon (opposite Spa St. Jean).
There is a short walk to the Roman amphitheatre remains (closed Monday). You can do this first if it is late afternoon, then go into the basilica.
That church has a great history.
