Yum! Winter in the northcountry is definitely the time for slow cookers-- we are very attached to ours for stews, pork and beef roasts and many other great things. Heck, chili done in a slow cooker all day is awesome as all the flavors have a chance to "marry."
Our current "magic appliance" is our "Instant Pot" which is basically the completely safe 21st century version of the old pressure cooker. As a foodie, if you haven't tried it, seriously consider it! Think perfectly braised short ribs... in 30 minutes.

I was deeply skeptical when my wife got this mystery device... I'm an old-fashioned "hand created" type of cook. But I've been converted; I'm a believer. And I generally DO NOT trust "as seen on TV" gadgets.
