For this series I tried to focus a little more on the Architecture of Johannesburg, and sneaked in two pictures of Pretoria as well.
Some interesting info regarding Johannesburg, which I picked up from Buzz South Africa:
"Johannesburg is well over 120 years old. It was founded in October 4th of 1886 during the Gold Rush period. Despite this fact, it is one of the youngest and newest major cities in the entire world but also one of the largest.
There is only one other city in Africa that is larger than The city of Johannesburg and that is Cairo Egypt. Therefore The city of Johannesburg is the second largest city in the entire continent of Africa. There is a hospital called the Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital which is the largest in the world. It has approximately 3,000 beds and is the only public hospital that serves about 3.5 million people in the city.
The city of Johannesburg has the worlds largest man-made forest. This city has over 10 million trees. This number is likely to get bigger because City Parks has taken on a project to plant another 200,000 trees. With these trees, the city will cope with the greenhouse effect as well as lower the level of noise in the city making it quieter and more peaceful.
Another thing about Johannesburg is that it is the largest city in the world that is not built on a coastline. It isn’t built on a lake or river either. As a result it is known to be the worlds largest dry port. Therefore most of cargo arrives in Durban and Cape Town and transfers over to the city. The Cradle of Humankind is one of the richest archaeological sites by the city. As a result 40% of Earth’s human fossils have been found in Johannesburg city and the surrounding area."
