Extreme Macro - Edge of a Snowflake

This macro shot of the edge of a tiny snowflake was done with the great Canon MP-E 65mm f2.8 lens. It was bright day light and I used two Canon 420ex ii Speedlite flashes at full power, as close as possible.

This is amazing @dieterschneider. Fascinating work. May we know how did you shot it? What was your setup? Was that Snowflake on a glass? What was in the background?

Thanks. The setup is described above the photo, just planting the gear i the snow as close as possible. The snowflake is on a snow covered ground with millions of other snowflakes, basically just snow everywhere. This is so close that it's not even possible to see with my eyes what I'm photographing, had to see it through the viewfinder. The dof is extremely shallow.

That's great! Awesome pic. That's a macro for real!

Thanks. I actually could not see the snowflake with my eyes, but I knew they where there :)

I almost typed "having the eyes and the technology to see the finest details." It would be cool if our eyes could see all of these things but it might be overwhelming. :)

That would be great. Lot's of details in the nature we are missing

Wow! That's awesome!

Wow... like a crystal rock!

yes, it's pretty facinating how these tiny things look :)

Completety fascinating @dieterschneider. A miracle by design. Upvoted, resteemed & DPS.

Awesome, really really incredible, you took the snowflake outside directly where he touched down, or collected in some way ?

Just a random spot on snowy ground. It was -17 degree celcius

ouch -17 !!! really cold ! Thanks for the info. :)

This sure is "as close as possible". Great macro!

very nice shot , still need to get my hands on a Canon MP-E 65mm one day to play with . voted, followed and resteemed

Thanks, yes it's a great lens but can't be used for anything else than macro though

that i'm aware off , right now the best magnification i get is from a reversed rokkor 28mm :) but it works like a charm.

Oh wow! So interesting. It reminds me of some snowflakes I've constructed out of stacked glass. Maybe I'll make some more of those...
