Scotland - The Moray Coast

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

The Moray Firth Coast in the North-East of Scotland is a hidden gem, just waiting to be explored.

Most visitors to Scotland manage to visit Edinburgh, and maybe Inverness, the famous golf courses and the mountains and islands of the west, but they don't think of heading to Scotland's north east coast where the fearsome Picts once reigned supreme!

This is an area steeped in history, yet often overlooked for the more famous tourist spots. I guarantee that a trip to this area will delight you when you discover stately homes, ruined castles, dramatic cliffs, quaint fishing villages, old harbors, pictish forts, standing stones, dramatic sunsets, the northern lights, dolphin watching etc. The list is endless, but I hope I have made my point!

In this blog post I am going to focus on the area around Buckie. Once a thriving shipbuilding and fishing port on the North Sea's Moray Firth, a good percentage of Buckie's population is employed on the offshore oil rigs. Supporting businesses for the oil industry can also be found. A few fishing boats remain, but once upon a time the boats in the harbor were so numerous that you could walk from one end of the harbor to the other on the boats' decks. Sadly, a way of life has almost been extinguished. The local Buckie and District Heritage Centre does a fantastic job of keeping the history of the fishing days alive, and is well worth a visit!

I spent a blissful childhood in Buckie playing on the braes and beaches, or playing kick the can in the street until nearly midnight on the weekends at midsummer. School days were tough because I had to go to bed when the sun was still high in the sky! Of course in midwinter I would go to school in the dark in the morning and come home in the near dark in the afternoon! Most people are surprised to learn how far north Buckie is. Its latitute is 57.68, which is pretty much the same as the latitude of Kodak , Alaska!
