The Test of Time
I happened upon this particular scene March 15th 2013 while on an adventure in Big Sur, CA. While the scene itself is not that far from the norm in Big Sur, this particular scene stood out to me more than most.
What struck me about this scene was the silent war waging between the stream and the giant towering above it. The slow ever persistent erosion of the foundation of these large trees caused by this tiny little stream, almost assuredly sealing its fate at some point in the future, was something to take note of. To find this tree engaged in a war, standing boldly in the face of time, surviving for hundreds of years, face inevitability and its own mortality at the whim of a simple stream really made me stop and think.
There are so few things which can stand against water in this world. In time, water will almost always win if offered opposition. Like so few things in this world, water is patient and has resolve to persist against seemingly insurmountable obstacles leaving nothing standing in its way. Water survives and can push forward and carry on until it gets where it wants to be. Anything unfortunate enough to stand in its way will shortly find itself wishing it hadn't been.
If I close my eyes, I can still hear the soft sound of water flowing over dirt and rocks, the wind blowing through the trees above, gently swaying back and forth. Sigh. One of the most peaceful moments of my career. Such a calm beautiful place.
Thanks for reading. :)
