How to make Neutral density filter

in #photography7 years ago

Neutral Density (ND) filter is designed to reduce the light flux passing through the lens. What is it for? For example, taking portraits on an open diaphragm (f / 1.4 - 2.0) on a bright, sunny day, you can get a threshold of shutter speed of 1/4000 sec and even 1/8000 sec on professional DSLRs. To reduce the incoming light, use a leaky neutral gray filter. And if you need to get exposure in a few seconds or even minutes to blur the sky, water and get rid of a lot of people and passing cars, then you need a high-density filter. The table of densities can be found easily on the Internet. My task is to tell you how to make such a filter at home from improvised means.

We will need a conventional tint film for automotive glass. You do not need to buy it, just go to any glass tinting workshop and ask for the cut of the darkest 5% of the film.

As you may have guessed, the filter will be made of film, but we will paste it on the inside of the lens to avoid more strong optical distortion.

Cut the circle under the inner lens of the lens with a small margin, but that the circle does not touch the chips to focus.

We need a large density filter, so we cut out 2 circles (or even 3).

Be sure to exfoliate, remove the transparent substrate and stick with adhesive side against each other. Take care not to get dust between the layers, or you get bubbles.

Cut extra, align on the circumference. And with the help of insulating tape we fix on the inside of the lens.

Next, install on the camera. The only downside - to focus and build the frame will have a long time peering or, in general, almost at random. But I just recently bought normal filters, and before that a lot of frames shot in this way. I even had a set of filters of different density.
Removed then this filter is very simple and leaves no traces.

Of course, for shooting at shutter speeds of more than 30 seconds we will need a tripod and a conventional remote control. You can buy on aliexpress for a penny. Mine has been serving for more than 5 years.

The filter gives a purple hue and there are times when the colors are difficult to correct.
Exposition is selected by experience. For an overcast day with textured clouds, the average exposure values: aperture 8-11, ISO 100-200, exposure time 90-120 seconds, a three-layer toner filter.

Nice photos.
welcome to steemit @evildeathcore
following you now. :D
follow me back pls.

Stunning photos @evildeathcore . I guess patience is something must have in photography to get that beautiful photos.

Many thanks for sharing @evildeathcore. Love each and every one of these photos,BTW

What a cool free of cost alternative to the expensive neutral density filters! To be honest, the results are not much different than the ones I can get with my 10-stop Hoya filter :)

Thanks for sharing!

Indeed, this self-made filter delivers :)

Fantastic!!!
🙂🙂🙂

Have you tried constructing improvized polarization filters yet? I believe there are polarizition filter films for computer displays which you could use.

never needed a polarization filter, so I did not have any thoughts to make it

Просто прекрасные фотографии. Слов нет.

Спасибо большое!
