The "Red" church

in #photography5 years ago (edited)

The Church of Simeon Stylite in Veliky Ustyug is called the "Red Church" for its appearance. But the church was not always of such a color - until the mid-80s it was of usual white color.

The construction of a stone church on the site of the eponymous wooden was begun in 1725. During the great fire, the church was badly burned, after which, with the funds of the Ustyug merchant I. Ya. Kurochkin, its reconstruction began, which ended in 1765. The Church of Simeon Stolpnik in its composition has no analogues in Russian architecture of the 18th century. On May 20, 2001, at the church of Simeon Stolpnik, services began again, and on March 7, 2003 the church was consecrated. http://sobory.ru/article/?object=06422
