White Horse Close

in #photography7 years ago

I'm pretty lucky I think. Some people have to close their eyes and wonder how things looked where they live 100, 200 even 300 years ago. I can just walk down the road from my office and down a quiet alley way and see this.

This is White Horse Close. There is some argument as to where the name comes from, some say it is because Mary Queen of Scots stabled her favourite white palfrey there (its just up the street from the royal palace), though its more likely to derive from the 'White Horse Inn' which was situated in the north end of the courtyard (where those stairs are in the center of the photo) from at least the 17th century.

This is an area of the city many miss because the entrance is very unassuming. If you don't know its there you'll walk right past it, which is a shame as its considered the most picturesque group of buildings in the City.

Fun fact: This is also the birthplace of William Dick, Veterinary Surgeon and founder of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, which is part of the University of Edinburgh (where I work).

You can read a bit more about Professor Dick here if you are interested: http://www.ed.ac.uk/vet/about/history

woosh

This is amazing, do people actually live there?

Yeah, I think so. They're just normal flats now.

So curious to see how it looks like inside :)

So am I but I'm pretty sure it's a private residence now :)

You're lucky, it's magical. Great photo and post.

That's such an evocative view. I've only visited Edinburgh once but did experience in Scotland that feeling of "this is the most beautiful place on the planet"...where the sky meets the sea up in Wick....just as in your beautiful place the present meets the past. So lovely :)

Thanks! Scotland does have some beautiful places like that. There is a lot of 'present meets the past' here. Historically listed buildings are not permitted to be demolished so now what they do is they demolish the inside leaving the old 'outer shell' and then build a new building inside it :)

Haha - prob shopping centers:)

Not far off :) the apple store in the center of town here is in one such building, and across the road where the old post office was is now an office block where microsoft and amazon are located. its quite varied. i dont care what they put in them, I'm just glad they are preserving them :)

whoa - tech clusters!

That is so cool you atake a short walk an seemingly go through a time warp

Yeah its magnificent. the weird thing here is when the new modern buildings start popping up in between the old ones.. it can look really odd and miss-matched. But it makes things interesting :) Personally I love the history. My old flat that I used to live in was built before america was discovered.. it makes you wonder who's lived there and what they must have seen. what kind of ghosts are there (i tell you those old flats had some weird things happening in them sometimes). At least twice i would be lying in bed and I could feel someone sit on the edge of my bed.. i'd sit up and there'd be no one there.

That is so cool indeed Sometimes I do Locke shots where you see a mix of old and new, I do that in the city here but of course nothing is really that old here :)

You must be attuned to the spirits, my wife and her son are very attuned to it, much more than me, but in one of the families house we stayed at in London they could sense being watched or someone moving even thought we couldn't see anyone, I didnt feel that but every night at exactly the same time I would wake up with the feeling someone was standing in the doorway watching me and no one was there, Kind of freaky

oh that is very freaky. i've never had that before and I am glad about it!

I will not mind at all if it never happens to me again LOL

I feel the same way :)

You are lucky, yes. How I miss Europe. Here in Asia we can find ancestral civilizations, wonderful, is true, but I miss the old Europe with these buildings and atmosphere!

I love that about Asia.. but whats wonderful about Europe is that here we still live in that history, those buildings are still being used. :)

True! You are right... I had never thought about that in this perspective... :) :)

It looks amazing! Such a great place for some medieval cosplay 😁

oh yes.. in fact just before the summer they filmed a bunch of outlander scenes across the street from this place. I had to walk past it every day to get to my office. it was interesting to see.
