So I have just moved to the country of Brunei - a beautiful place but there is an underlying problem which is on a lot of peoples minds this is the plastic problem...
This is a beach in Brunei and it upsets me to say that this is not an uncommon sight. This beach in particular is littered with single use plastics from other parts of Asia while Brunei are trying to cut down their waste.
For example when you go to a restaurant there will not be tissues for you to pick out - they will give them too you and as few as possible, plastic straws are frowned upon as they contribute to this problem so non single use straws are seen more often. Although the rubbish is not entirely from Brunei - it is drawn into the country as other countries dump their rubbish and it is brought here by the ocean currents.
The rubbish is also found in the rivers of the jungle - yesterday when i was on a river boat tour, the boat was constantly running through plastic bottles and plastic bags which at times spoiled the beauty of the rivers.
So this is the killer - a big killer towards the wildlife, the beauty and us from the micro plastics put into the ocean through the degrading of the plastic...
I hope that you learned something from this read - thank you for reading. OP
It is a sad fact that so many single use plastics washed up on shores around the world come from countries that have the resources and capacity to deal with them in a manner that is more conscientious to our environment. Thank you for sharing this important message, OP.
