Mankato, MN got hit rather hard by some severe weather today. There was even a confirmed tornado, although I didn't see it.
The clouds were amazing, so I pulled off on a gravel road and tried to get some decent shots. The old Canon 7D has a little trouble with low light, but a few turned out well enough to post.
This first shot shows the storm hovering over Mankato.
This was a calm moment after the first cell moved through and before we were slammed with downpours and dime-sized hail.
The sun is peeking through the clouds now, though!
I really like that first shot especially. The contrast between the light, dark, and earth is beautiful.
Thanks! I got to see the underside of that dark bit not long after. Not that I'd likely notice on the old truck, but I don't think it took any hail damage...
Love that first photo, I've never seen anything like that where I'm from, quite the sight!
This area gets huge storm fronts, occasionally, and it's so flat that you can watch their approach from the horizon. We get several tornados a year, but they usually go through farm field.
So you're a storm chaser huh? Niice!
Haha that first shot btw, simply breathtaking - so much beauty and anticipation in one. Great photography.
Thank you! I'm not normally a storm chaser, but I got caught between cells and the sky was too amazing to pass up a photo or two.
Well hey, If you can do it. Why not!
Nice shot. I love trying to photograph storms too.
Thanks! Storms are interesting subjects for sure!
I love shooting storms 😊
