Throughout all my years of being a photographer, there's one common subject that I've never shot - my cars. I guess the fact of owning a car doesn't make it feel "special" to me to shoot, hence why all 6 of my cars have never had their 15 minutes of fame in front of the lens. But now, I decided it was time to change that - starting with my Subaru WRX STi.
After being inspired by seeing some of Pepper Yandell's work after watching the Netflix series Fastest Car, I wanted the focus of this shoot to mainly be motion photos. I've always been a fan of motion photos, as they give the scene a sense of movement - that's what a car is supposed to do after all right?
But there is a twist though... all of the motion would be added in post-processing. Yep, that's correct. All of these motion photos are composites of two or three individual photos.
For more info on how to add motion in during post-processing, take a look right here
Ok, so I also did some non-motion photos. But come on... look at that lighting.
For this shoot, I enlisted a fellow Subaru driver to come along as car mover / bouncer (he has a large gun - always useful). In terms of locations, we only used two. One: a very deserted road on the absolute outskirts of the suburbs, and two: the deserted parking garage of a shopping centre.
We just missed the ultimate golden hour light, so I may have overdone it in Photoshop.
In total, we only spent a few hours on this, of which about 75% was driving around aimlessly trying to find a decent angle. But regardless, we finished with some photos that I can proudly use to immortalize my beloved Subaru WRX STi with. I'm thinking to get the top photo printed out on a canvas for the man-cave - what do you think?
Enjoy the rest of the photos below!

Love that one of the car in the dark garage with the lights from above.
Thanks @gholsa. Do you notice it's much darker than the other garage ones? We were hit with loadshedding just before we were about to leave for a braai, and only the LED lights in the garage stayed on. Made for a good few extra photos...
It's called making the most with what you are given...good skills
