Comayagua First Capital of Honduras

in #photography7 years ago

Comayagua was the first capital of Honduras when the country became independent in 1821 and held the position until 1880 when the capital was moved to Tegucigalpa for political reasons. The city has a population of close to 100,000 and is the hub of a very important agricultural region. This is where the Palmerola airport is situated, this airport is to become the principal international airport in the country, right now it is the home of a small US military base.

Comayagua is basically a colonial town, narrow cobbled streets, old fashioned houses and many catholic churches. The Cathedral's construction was started in the 16th century but only inaugurated in 1711. It holds the oldest clock in the American continent, this clock was made about 900 years ago.

Comayagua is a very attractive place for tourists in Honduras especially during Easter, when the town celebrates this commemoration with many different activities, including the religious images made with colored saw dust that adorn the streets.

This is the central plaza.

These two are views of the Cathedral, you can also notice the oldest clock in these photos.
