Background
Even as a young child, Pocej had a passion for photography but did not seriously pursue it until he was 30 years old. He has worked and resided in Monaco since 2012, and his photos have been described as cinematic and graceful.
The Photographer, Albert Pocej
Albert Pocej, a photographer from Lithuania, photographed 15 women as they reached an orgasm.
The Dream
According to a statement written by the photographer himself, a curious idea came to him in a dream. He dreamt of '[exploring] the female orgasm through a photograph experiment.'
The Process
What would you say if someone approached you with an idea to photograph you while you climaxed?
Pocej had some trouble finding willing participants but eventually received permission and interest from 20 different women. This number dropped to 15 after some discovered they wouldn't be acting.
In order to capture these images, Pocej used lapse photography, which takes photos by the second.
Facts About the Female Orgasm
Planned Parenthood says that about a third of all women have trouble climaxing.
Clitoral Stimulation
Most women are able to climax through clitoral stimulation. About 80 percent have revealed that they face difficulties when attempting to orgasm through vaginal intercourse alone.
The Criticism Pours In
Just as any other controversial work, Pocej's series has invited plenty of criticism. One woman expressed that she felt that this was too private for public display. Another described it as 'deconstructed porn.'
Other viewers have called out Pocej's work as 'perverted.' There are a handful that have made inappropriate comments regarding the women in the photos. Unfortunately, this is something we see wherever female pleasure is documented, no matter the context.
Positive Responses
There are many viewers, however, who have delighted in his work, calling it 'beautiful,' 'fantastic,' and 'unique.' The series has been shared online over 7,000 times.
The Takeaway: Women Know What They Want
If there's one thing we can take away from this series, and it will probably be different for everyone, it would be that women know what they want.
Pocej's decision to photograph each woman without partners or any extra help is empowering. Women know how to please themselves.
