It's actually a wonderful thing to have a dog. I recently got one after a long time, an indian mastiff-german shepherd cross.
I feel cross bred dogs are less prone to the generic diseases and disorders because of the good immunity.
In 8 months, he's now 80 lbs and growing. Big as a dinosaur.
