I learned something in this, so thanks! I'll start using my lens with a less-than-fully-open aperture now and see what happens. I really like the image of the kingfisher in the rain. It makes clear that the kingfisher has to put up with being pelted by the raindrops.

Hi, glad to know I helped. And yeah the rain also disturbs the surface of the water so it's harder for the kingfisher to see the fish. Thanks for the feedback: )
Poor kingfisher! : ( But they have a pretty sweet life otherwise, hanging out by the water and eating fish. : )
They don't have to pay rent for their nests, or tax on the fish that they eat. So yeah it must be a pretty sweet life : )
haha -- would you trade off that for having to sit in the rain, eat raw fish, and nest in a hole in a mud bank? ; )
