Touch Me Not plant. Why it culrs its leaves when touched??

in #photography7 years ago

Just Captured some beautiful photographs of touch me not plant and its flowers from my smartphone and wondered why it curls its leaves when we touch or shake them. Is it a animal like plant that has locomotion? or is it a dual plant animal creature? why it does like this ? have you ever wondered?

Then I searched around the internet and found this reason.

This type of movement is called rapid plant movement. When the plant is not touched there is large amount of fluid inside the cells of its leaves which makes them rigid and taut so they stay in spread form.
But when they are touched or shaken many receptors present in its surface of leaves get stimulated, this causes fluid to leak out of the cells. the cells loose rigidity and eventually the leaves become flaccid and they curl of.
It is just like curling up of the leaves of other plants when they do not get water, but this is a reversible process. after some time the leaves again come back spreading their wings , this is because of return of water and electrolytes into the cells which again make the leaves rigid.[source]

Nature is beautiful as well as interesting to watch isnt it?
