Do you know the main differences between bees and wasps?

The following photos show the 'European paper wasp' (Polistes dominula) on the orange-colored flowers of Asclepias tuberosa and a bee species on a red blooming variety of 'common yarrow' (Achillea millefolium). I wonder if I could sell you the bee as a honey bee, but opposite to its well known relative it is one of the many solitary living species, I guess Andrena flavipes.

What are the main differences between bees and wasps?

  • Bees use a proboscis to incorporate nectar.
Wasps possess chewing-biting mandibles, with which they are able to crush their prey, for example Insects and spiders.

  • The body of the bees is usually rounder and more hairy.
Wasps are more elongated and slender, with a clearly visible waist and less hairy.

  • The colors of bees are usually rather dark (brown, gray, ..).
Wasps often show a black yellow (sometimes reddish) warning color.

Aww bees are a little more round! :)

wasps are the evil and useless versions of bees was my definition always..

Why, because they eat other animals? We do as well ...
They are useful to regulate ecosystems, because they prevent that certain other insects are getting too numerous.

That's right! My opinion is, there is no useless creature on this planet. Every species has its place in the eco-system.

Right ... but ... wait, there is maybe one, but I don't dare to name it, I mean this one with the big brain ... :-)

You mean the one that's not only useless, but also destroying everything around him? :)

I know these creatures!

Beautiful flowers with the bees and the wasps! Interesting information!

Great information and images to go with it! I'm trying to think of a child I can show this to but I already know that they'll say that both are still scary.

Then just answer them that the most scary animal on earth is called Homo sapiens. :-)

Hah! I'll do just that!

wow wieder einmal super macro photos :)
und vielen Dank für die Aufklärungsarbeit ;)

Nice educational lesson on bees and wasps. It is also interesting how honey bees and bumble bees are different. :)

There are quite some ... for example bumblebees are bigger and one state contains less members. Also they are able to fly, even if temperatures are rather low as they can regulate the temperature of their flight muscles.

Amazing pictures. Thank you mike

Wasps are starting to fly around again. We're on top of them not making nests on the patio, but I do wish we would see more bees. We get the black carpenter bees but every now and then we'ser see a yellow one.

one thing is for sure they both scare the crap out of me !!!! hahahhahha

Great post, upvoted and followed!

Take pictures that look beautiful, ilike

Nice post. I was not knowing the difference between bees and wasps, thanks for info.

Nice close ups @jaki01 :) I actually didn't know that these yellow, hairless and elongated things were wasps, haha! As for the bees, I have been pretty good at recognizing them so far, mainly by their hairy bodies. Thanks for the informative article.

wowww so much beautiful and amazing...please friend upvote and follow me@stellawatson

I still fear of wasps but love the bees. There is nothing wrong with the wasps but it is just my childhood fear when I was bitten by it. Pics are so colorful that gives a soothing effect to our eyes.

super , good article ,go head jaki

Thanks! :)

Ooh yes I know: Bees are cute and fluffy and make sure the planet survives, wasps are the spawn of HELL !!! :)

Oh, our planet is rather tough, but you are right, many ecosystems including our species might crash without bees ... then bacteria will have the task to restart evolution ... ;-)

Great photos! love them!

Check this guy out :)

Bee!

verwechsle ich irgendwie immer...
vielen Dank für die ausführliche Zusammenfassung!

so basically bees are little more small than wasp

That depends on the species.
The differences I named apply for most species though ...

Hey :)
Sehr schöner Beitrag.. sehr informativ.. - Danke.

Great pictures of nature! I admire @jaki01 your skill!

Very nice shoot

Without bees the world dies. I was really impressed with this fact. Nice post!

Terima kasih! :)

Great photos! Very colorful, the only problem is when bees and wasps are flying ;) Now seriously, sometimes it's hard to distinguish them both, maybe I need glasses!

Toller informativer Beitrag. Weiter so! Alles Liebe Ellen

i was not aware of that to be honest thanks for sharing @jaki01
