The Evolution of My Photography Kit (Condensed Version)

I've been seeing a lot of questions in my comments wondering what I shoot with, so I decided to make a post about it instead of answering every single comment the same way over and over. Besides, I just added some new additions to the family so I'll be happy to expand on it.

I will be the first to admit as a Travel Photographer, this is too much to carry. I'm always buying the latest technology while simultaneously trying to shrink my bag. It never happens. Whenever I try to slim it down I always have a hard time parting with stuff because I never want to be without it. I may not use something for months, but the minute I don't have it — I get presented with a time to use it.

As I get ready for long travel, I'm going to try and slim it down one more time, this time I will probably lose the GoPro case and most of the GoPros and just keep one or two in my bag. Aside from that, I've been trying to talk myself into getting rid of my a7Rii and lenses so I can travel even lighter with just the RX100 MK V. Whether or not that will happen is to be determined.

Photography is an expensive hobby and it's not travel efficient. The amount of worry that comes with making sure you didn't lose anything, misplace anything, making sure it's safe where you put it + the weight that comes with carrying it, etc. — it's just not worth a few extra megapixels in the long run.

I started off, 5 years ago with this kit:

3 years later, this was my kit:

Then there was this:

Today I'm down to this:

DCzKK1nUwAAH_TX.jpg

Main Camera: SONY a7Rii

Lenses: SONY Zeiss 35mm f/1.4, SONY Zeiss 16-35 f/4, SONY G-Master 24-70 f/2.8!

Second Camera: SONY RX100 MKV

Stabilizer: Zhiyun Crane M Series

Additional Cameras: 3 GoPro Hero 5s, 1 GoPro Hero 4 (and a BUNCH of mounts, batteries and memory cards)

Drone: DJI Mavic Pro w/ Polar Pro ND Filters

What do you travel with? Do you prefer to go all out or travel light?

Sort:

I'm so jealous! Right now I have a Fuji XE1 with a 35mm and 18-55 lenses and a DJI Mavic Pro.

This is super helpful! I'm just getting into photography as it's such a fun, creative hobby that goes along with my travel obsession. I personally struggle with wanted to bring along every lens I own and traveling minimally.

Interesting post. Nice equipment.

You have good material. The most important photo is about the lenses. Thank you

I am new in steemit..
hope you inspire me by upvoting

Expensive hobby is photography. But oh so rewarding.

Found it interesting to read about your kit. I have a tendency to go a bit overboard often and bring more equipment than really needed!

Thanks for sharing your set-up! Its always interesting seeing what the pro's are using to capture all of their beautiful work - I am a big advocate that its not the equipment that makes the artist, but I do believe that some amazing qualities come through better with select high-end equipment. I look forward to seeing more of your photos! Thanks for sharing :)

Nice kit. The Mavic is the best. Hows that feiyu gimbal working out? I am about to buy the WG2

Quite a lot of equipment, but you look very organised.

Great kit! I'm looking to get a compact stabilizer
is yours easy to use and setup?

So far I just carry Canon EOS 70d. I feel I desperately need a wide angle lens but it is just 18-55 mm kit lens for now. High altitude and long climbs are tough with more weight...

This may be a dumb question...but why so many Go Pros?

Wow! That's an interesting setup you got there. Looks great.

If you have a minute please check my new story about Multimedia Fountain Park in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. I'm sure you will like it!
All the best :)@jefflombardo technology is stealing sth magical from photography... and you are comparing only 3 years! Nice post.

Do you really need a full frame camera with you on your travels? ......all the lenses too?
I agree. Leave the big Sony at home. 😀
Upvoted and following!

Hello! So Canon changed to Sony? I'm also a photographer, I make stocks photos. Now I have Canon. Also look at Sony. I follow you, very cool photos! Really cool!

Surprisingly small kit! I was expecting a whole slew of gear. That A7ii looks b-e-a-utiful. Haha I have a little a5000, budget friendly but dammit do I lust after the A7 (hell, I lust after a 6000).

Great post, thanks for sharing this with us!

Sony is cool camera... :)

The Crane M is a solid option but have you ever tried the new Crane M2?
