Piedra del Indio

in #photography3 years ago

There are a bunch of great places to visit in Coyhaique, and one of the quickest and easiest is the Piedra del Indio. It’s a natural rock formation that’s located above the Simpson River within walking distance of Coyhaique.

The Piedra del Indio is a popular and easily accessible attraction in Coyhaique Chile. It is a location that is frequently included in blogs, tours, and lists of things to see in Coyhaique. It even has it’s own location page on Instagram.

The photo above is probably the most common viewpoint of the Indian Head and it is taken from the cable bridge over the Simpson River. Fall colors typically peak during the month of April and the tall Alamo trees are especially beautiful.

The rock, sculpted only by nature, has a distinct Indian-like profile. However, some people believe that this is a story about a short romance. According to the legend, two Tehuelche Indians carved their feelings of love in the rock, which then became immortal. They also believe that the body of a woman can be seen on the head of the sculpture.

The Simpson River, which flows through the region provides a unique atmosphere to the area. It’s also used to refer to a group of Indian tribes in the area. These tribes are known as Tehuelches.

Follow the road, Camino Piedra del Indio, as seen on the map above to the small bridge that crosses the Rio Simpson (Simpson River). From the bridge you will have an excellent view of the Piedra del Indio.

This bridge is a great place to view the Simpson River and the Indian Head formation.

The bridge is currently closed to vehicles due to structural issues, so you’ll have to park beside the road on either end of the bridge. For purposes of viewing the river and the Indian Head though this is great. It means there is no traffic and you can safely walk across and take your time enjoying the view.

Walk across the bridge and follow a few well worn paths to the river and get a great view of the suspension bridge from below.
