Old-fashioned bikes didn’t use gears, so the only way to go faster was to have a bigger wheel. Pedals were directly attached to the front wheel, so the bigger the wheel, the further a single pedal push propelled you. In bike races, speed was a crucial advantage worth the absurd size.

Hmm, maybe I would, but it looks highly uncomfortable to ride on it, also not very functional. I like the modern bikes, mostly those with gears as they are far more functional. Anyway, for it's time it was the top of the top :)
