What does homesteading look like…
when we’re not looking?
If you look very closely in this photo, you will see something special we put on the ground at the base of the tree…
Rotten wood duck eggs (and a raccoon in the background)!
Last summer we had pair of wood ducks lay eggs in one of the nesting boxes on our property (up in the tree pictured). When the babies finally hatched and flew away, we cleaned out the box and found a few unhatched, rotten eggs that had been left behind. At that time, we knew mama raccoon and her three babies had been hanging around the property so we placed the eggs at the base of the tree and set up a camera not too far away!
Mama Coon has a great nose and her babies ate very well that night!
The next morning, we saw the remnants of egg shells and a few little paw prints in the dirt. I hope they enjoyed their little treat!
Camera: Moultrie Night Vision Trail camera
Alterations: N/A - added red circle and arrow to show eggs and raccoon

Love it. Raccoons can be a nuisance in the bush. They make a mess, and don't clean up after themselves. LOL
Eww! Rotten eggs! It's amazing what animals can stomach. Shows us how puny our immune and digestive systems are! Lol!
It's fascinating to look at the night photos seeing raccoons in action. Did you need to use a motion sensor? Or was it from a video? Thank you for sharing!
It's a motion sensor camera!
I use to get trail camera pictures with raccoons, deer and turkey all at the same time. It really surprised me.
It is surprising what we miss at night! There was also a flying squirrel caught on camera that we didn't know we had hanging around here!
I'll bet those raccoons were happy with the find. I was just looking at my camera as well. Mostly cats getting a drink but the deer have been around as well. I've been surprised at how much the deer like the salt block.
