About 30,000–42,000 years ago, there was a large prehistoric lake on where the salt flats is, Lake Minchin, so the lake later dried up and left two new modern lakes and two salt flat dersert , being the smaller Salar de Coipasa and the larger Salar de Uyuni
The salt flats are located in southwestern Bolivia near the Andes, the salt flats has an amazing flatness, the entire area of the Salar has an average altitude variations within one meter
When the salt flats are covered with water, it becomes one of the largest mirrors on Earth
